We meet on the third Wednesday of each month from March to November at 11:30am at Warwick Courthouse in Denbigh for lunch with presentations beginning at noon. Pre-order a box lunch or bring your own. See below for details.

Warwick County Historical Society Luncheons

From March through November, the WCHS offers a full schedule of luncheon events with interesting historical presentations on old Warwick County, Mulberry Island, Newport News and other topics of interest. 

Lunch

Optional pre-ordered boxed lunches are arranged through Jason's Deli ($15) and offer a variety of sandwich and salad options.

 •      Sandwich Box – includes sandwich, pickle, chips, fudge nut brownie and beverage.  Choice of: Roast Beef, Ham, Turkey, Tuna, Chicken Salad on Wheat, White or Rye. Choice of: American Cheese, Swiss, Cheddar 

•      Salad Box – salad with dressing, fudge nut brownie and beverage.  Choice of: Nutty Mixed-Up, Big Chef, Chicken Caesar, Chicken Club. 

Place your order prior to the event and pay at the door - or - those who prefer are welcome to bring their own meal, brown bags okay!

Upcoming Events for 2022

  • May 18th at 11:30am - May Luncheon at Endview Plantation -“Please join the Warwick County Historical Society for their May meeting at Endview Plantation.  After a tented lunch on the lawn, Historian J. Michael Moore will give an overview of the property’s colorful history and discuss the historic house gallery’s recent renovation.  Following the lecture, members are invited to tour the house and gallery.” 


  • June 15th at Warwick Courthouse  at 11:30 am– “Ephrata: An Eighteenth-Century Intentional Community” presented by Archaeologist Courtney Birkett. “The story of a mystical sect that began in the wilderness of Pennsylvania.  A charismatic leader, a disgruntled splinter faction bound for Virginia, rumors of magic, and twentieth-century archaeology.” 


  • July 20th at Warwick Courthouse - “Lions of the Dan” presented by author James Brandau. Lions of the Dan widens the aperture to introduce real heroes and amazing deeds that have been suppressed until now. The author presents the experiences of real soldiers in their own words and highlights the much-ignored history of Southside Virginia, presenting the Civil War start to finish from a unique regional perspective. 


  •  August 17th at Warwick Courthouse – 6 PM – Annual Potluck Supper with author Jo Anne Kraus who will present  "Holy Experiment: The Warwick River Mennonite Colony, 1897-1970 " – Bring your best country side-dish or dessert and continue an old tradition with your fellow members and friends.  


  • September 21st at Warwick Courthouse – “A Toast to Colonial Virginia's Drunken History.” More than 13,000 years ago, our ancestors discovered that decaying fruit could take on a magical quality.  That magic was wine, and since appearing on the scene, it and other fermented beverages have been an important part of world culture and identity. 


  • October 19th at Warwick Courthouse -  “A Look at the Fascinating Archaeology of Mulberry Island” presented by Fort Eustis Community Resources manager and archaeologist, Dr. Christopher McDaid.  


  • November 16th at Warwick Courthouse – “Virginia’s World War I Hello Girls” by Chris Garcia. During the Great War, the US Army Signal Corps employed young women as telephone switchboard operators.  Learn the story of Newport News native Marie Steen who volunteered as an operator at the Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation.   

Volunteers Needed

The society holds work sessions at the 1810 Warwick Courthouse on Wednesdays (other than luncheon meeting dates) cataloguing Warwick's history and a variety of other needed tasks. Join us on Wednesdays from noon to two pm to get your hands dirty in old Warwick history! 

Guests are welcome

Our meetings and events are open to the public. Bring a friend, a guest or just come by yourself to meet a fantastic group of local history aficionados, historians, genealogists and explore local history topics with a very fine group of members. We hope you will find a place with us and become a member after you try us out a time or two.
